Women Entrepreneurs
Women Entrepreneurs in India have come a long way.
There are many women in history, but only some were able to create it. One such example is of a venture that gave many women a way to earn sustainable livelihood using the only skills they had i.e. cooking, Yes I am taking about none other than Lijjat Papad.
Lijjat was the brain child of seven Gujrati women from Bombay (now Mumbai).
Perhaps the most inspiring and impactful Women Entrepreneurs in India.
Jaswantiben Jamnadas Popat, Parvatiben Ramdas Thodani, Ujamben Narandas Kundalia, Banuben N. Tanna, Laguben Amritlar Gokani, Jayaben V. Vithaalani and one more lady whose name is not known, all lived in Lohana Nivas, a group of five buildings in Girgaum, Bombay (now Mumbai).
These women made sure that other women like them get to have a stable earning for their family. They started this small scale business in 1959 with the seed capital of only Rs 80, that turned out to be a business worth Rs. 800 Crores in 2018 providing employment to more than 43,000 women from all over India.
Without any prior knowledge of how to set up a business, they managed to ponder on all the deciding factors for the business.
Initially they decided to make 2 different kind of papads in order to capture two different markets. but later agreed to have only one standard papad for everyone and never to compromise with the quality of the product.
The first branch outside Maharashtra was established in Valod, Gujrat in 1968. after that they never looked back and did all they could to make Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad a national brand.
The papad brand also got famous for it catchy jingle "Kurram Kurram" and a bunny eating papad in the commercial.
These strong headed women proved that for making dreams into reality you don't need no fancy degrees just passion and a strong will to create a change in the society. Women Entrepreneurs in India have truly come a long way.
Cheers :)
